It’s not covid which is disturbing the peace of this neighbourhood but other man-made troubles. Come afternoon, the residents of this building are pained by the screams of injured cocks and pigeons, made to fight and race, for the joy of a few youth.
Madhuri (49) (name changed on request), a resident of Swastik Road, Shantinagar, alleges that the son of the building’s owner’s, conducts fights with
Madhuri stays in the three-storied building which is near Rajarajeshwari temple and says this is an everyday affair.
“Youths aged between 17 and 20 gather on the terrace of that building and indulge in pigeon racing and brutal cock fights, both organised as tournaments among the youths, with betting involved,” Madhuri told BM.
Four families live in the building and the owner has a house on the second floor, where he lives with his son. Lohith, the son, keeps cages on the terrace and breeds at least 20 pigeons and eight gamecocks for this business alone. “Recently, during a fight, four of Lohith’s gamecocks were killed. He and his two friends, Ayapppa and Shoaib, used to tie blades on the rooster’s legs and set them up for a fight with another rooster.
During practice sessions and tournaments, they would also feed the gamecocks and pigeons with alcohol and some chemical drugs to boost their fighting and racing skills. On Monday, there was a pigeon racing tournament and Lohith and his team lost the bet. The betting happens with each participant contributing at least Rs 20,000 for a winning sum of Rs 1 lakh,” Madhuri told BM.
The nuisance starts around late afternoon with the screeching sounds of roosters crying out in pain as the knives tied to their feet cut into them as they are forced to fight each other.
Many neighbours, including two families have raised objections and requested them not to indulge in such practices of animal cruelty. Another family residing close-by has tipped off CUPA and a few animal activists in the city who are in the process of inspecting the spot and rescuing the birds, said Madhuri. Whenever neighbours protest and inform the police or activists, the sporting activities come to a stop, only to be resumed in a few days with impunity.
“At one instance, one of the boys stripped his trousers and flashed me when I made a big noise about the cruel bloodsport,” said Madhuri.
Madhuri later contacted a senior animal activist Harish KB and filed a complaint with him.
- So, I bought pair of pigeons, first was male, then after 2 or 3 days, I bought a female, I knew their genders coz' of the attitude of the male towards the female (Courting) and also their Bones near their butts, female wide V shape and male tight V shape, they are together for 1 week now after I.
- Sometimes when I'm outdoors feeding the pigeons, I observe that once in a while, two pigeons will puff and coo at each other and then start to fight by chasing, flapping their wings at each other, pecking and pulling each other's feathers. Also, sometimes a pigeon will find a smaller pigeon and 'bully' it by pulling its feathers.
The humble pigeon may be an unlikely breed of star but an author-illustrator duo from Melbourne have been turning the birds into a crime-fighting troupe of superheroes – and they’re about to. Trash Bandits, I Am Fish and Pigeon Simulator are three prototypes released by Bossa Games (creators of Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread), with an aim of letting the public help decide which of them are made into a full game.
Trash Bandits is a physics based split-screen multiplayer game for 2-4 players and sees rival teams of foxes driving around a city and attempting to grab trash bags and throw them into their garbage truck. Physically throwing the garbage into the trucks can be a little tricky though and often you may end up throwing yourself in!

I Am Fish is a single-player game which is essentially a spiritual successor to I Am Bread, and sees you controlling a little goldfish as it attempts to make its way back to the ocean. Being a fish, you can’t survive out of water, so must attempt to roll your goldfish bowl (or other water receptacle) through urban environments. It’s quite tricky to master (you don’t control the bowl, you control the fish that’s moving around inside the bowl), but once you get to grips with it then it’s a lot of fun and there’s a lot of detail in the three large prototype levels.
Pigeon Simulator sees you flying around a city and generally making a nuisance of yourself. It’s playable in single-player or up to four player multiplayer and gives you busy city environment to explore. You can poop on things, steal food, build your nest and cause an assortment of physics based chaos.
I Am Fish is probably the most polished and fun of the three prototypes, but each has their good points and they all contain a nice blend of humor and physics based carnage. See which one you like the most and vote to make it into a full game!
